A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Speech and Hearing Association of Pakistan (SHAP) is a nonprofit organization, registered with the Registrar of Societies, at Karachi.

“SHAP is the only national association fully representing and passionately supporting its members that include speech-language pathologists and audiologists.”

Speech-language pathologists and audiologists are individuals that hold appropriate qualifications designated by the country where the degree is obtained.  SHAP requires that they must be fully qualified and must hold a degree i.e. BS / B.Sc. / M.A. / M.S. in speech language therapy/pathology (or communication disorders) and audiology from a recognized university in their own country before applying.

OUR HISTORY

SHAP was founded in the year 2000 by the efforts of volunteers from the fields of pediatrics, psychology and speech and language pathology from Pakistan, Canada and UK. With the joint efforts of the founding members SHAP successfully signed an MOU with Ziauddin University, Karachi to initiate the first ever 4-year undergraduate program in speech language pathology/therapy. This was the very first program with specified courses of speech language communication and hearing disorders in Pakistan which was later transformed to speech language pathology and audiology.

Currently SHAP not only oversees clinical practice of the professionals in the realm of speech language pathology and audiology but also monitors the academic rigor of the variety of programs that majors in speech language pathology and audiology.
